Surgery for Your Child
Children are among our favorite patients, and we see a lot of them. Children under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Here are some pointers we have learned from parents over the years.
Prepare your child for his or her visit to the doctor:
- Reassure the child that you will be there too.
- Let children bring a favorite small stuffed toy or book to the office, if they like.
- Be matter-of-fact about the visit. Every care is taken to place our youngest patients at ease and to avoid causing them any more discomfort or stress than necessary.
- Do not bring any other children into the exam room, unless absolutely necessary. This can make an exam more difficult for the patient and the physician.
We talk a child through the surgery without making it scary. We have a DVD walking them through the surgery process.
When a child simply cannot be calmed, your doctor will kindly but firmly do what needs to be done. If this should be necessary, your support will be deeply appreciated.
